For the last five years, Portland, Maine has developed a reputation as a
sort of vest-pocket Nashville of the Great White North, producing crack alt-country
bands at a rate out of proportion to its size and location.
This second album by The Coming Grass augments that reputation. Fronted
by the husband-wife team of New York City rock veteran Nate Schrock and sweet-tart
singer Sara Cox and anchored by ex Uncle Tupelo/Wilco drummer Ken Coomer,
this quintet mixes bracing, guitar propelled roots rock with country elements
from all over the map.
The result is a sound that recalls the Uncle Tupelo/Wilco/Son Volt axis,
the Bay State's Blood Oranges and alt-country inspirations the Rolling Stones,
but that has a grace, unity and intelligence all its own. You heard it here
first: The Coming Grass are coming on.
